Covid-19 Treatment Hospital is at the final level of the Covid-19 treatment system in Hanoi and some other northern provinces. It also performs the functions of a national Covid-19 intensive care unit, which admits, gives emergency aid to and treats severe cases of Covid-19 patients.

With the provision of this ECMO system, Covid-19 Treatment Hospital will have an additional modern and important “weapon” to fight against the pandemic, increase changes to save more lives and minimize the number of Covid-19 deaths. The ECMO system handover is more meaningful in the context when the numbers of new Covid-19 cases in Hanoi and many other northern localities are on the rise and the new Omicron variant, which is more transmissible, has been detected in Vietnam.

Taking delivery of the ECMO system and Covid-19 drugs, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Bui Hai, Deputy Director of Covid-19 Treatment Hospital, expressed his gratitude to Hoa Lam Corporation, Gia An 115 Hospital and VietinBank for presenting drugs which were important to the Covid-19 treatment regimen issued by the Ministry of Health, especially for seriously-ill Covid-19 patients.

Covid-19 Treatment Hospital was grateful for this support, especially in the context of amid the complicated progression of the pandemic and the shortage of drugs and medical supplies and equipment for Covid-19 treatment. The hospital committed to use these supplies properly to ensure the treatment effectiveness in line with the spirit of the ECMO provision program and to meet the trust and support placed on us, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Bui Hai stressed.

Ms. Tran Thi Lam, Chairwoman of Hoa Lam Corporation, said the ECMO provision program was launched with an aim to support more Covid-19 patients, reduce the risk that they may get worse or die and support and share the difficulties with entities in the frontline  of the fights against  the Covid-19 treatment. The program was part of the activities taken by Hoa Lam Corporation, Gia An 115 Hospital and VietinBank since the onset of the forth Covid-19 wave to join hands with the entire country to fight the pandemic.

In the upcoming periods, Hoa Lam Corporation and Gia An 115 Hospital will buy a large number of ECMO systems to improve the treatment effectiveness at the Covid-19 Treatment Center of Gia An 115 Hospital. Additionally, the ECMO provision program will be maintained to accompany many frontline entities, like Covid-19 Treatment Hospital of Hanoi Medical University Hospital, in the fight against Covid-19 .

The Chairwoman of Hoa Lam Corporation added that the corporation had a plan to sign a contract with an ECMO producer to buy ECMO systems in each periods for training of the system use. The training will bring benefits in the long term, rather than during the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

ECMO, which stands for ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, is an oxygen exchange system outside the patient’s body, providing oxygen to the patient by directly pumping oxygen into blood without the participation of lungs. ECMO is often used to support patients with severe lung injures who fail to get in enough oxygen or take out carbon dioxide (CO2) out of their bodies, and to support patients who are waiting their hearts to recover or waiting for organ transplants, such as heart or lung transplants.

ECMO systems

During the Covid-19 pandemic, ECMO systems have become more important as many critically-ill patients have been saved after they were put on ECMO. Especially, new-generation ECMO systems have been improved to optimize the transport and treatment of patients. They have blood pressure meters without external connection, which allow the measurement of SpO2, PaO2 and Hb indicators. However, due to the high cost, the number of ECMO systems in Vietnam remains modest, and they are only available at large hospitals.
